User Generated Quilt

My Graphics lessons at school were combined with Textiles to save money.  During one of the last lessons of the year, I got bored of sitting by myself drawing lightbulb boxes and went to see what the Textiles lot were doing.  They were learning how to make quilts, so for the first time in about 4 years, I picked up a needle and thread and started stitching bits of fabric together.  I haven’t stopped since then, and the quilt is starting to get rather big.

At the same time, I’ve been admiring Rachael’s Q*Bee quilts where people trade digital quilt patches.  So I thought it would be cool to create a real quilt that anyone can contribute to.

Your Patch

  1. Think of a design.  It can be anything you like (as long as it’s not obscene!)  Your patch could be a scanned in drawing, something made in your favourite graphics program, or a photo you’ve taken
  2. Your design will need to be within a 10cm x 10cm square, plus a 1cm hem or margin round the outside (making it 12cm x 12cm)  You can use the template patch I’ve created here.
  3. Bear in mind that anything going over the hem won’t be visible, and the colours will be a lot more dull than if they were printed on paper or card.
  4. Save your patch design as an image file like .png/.jpg/.gif
  5. email the patch to anna@maban.co.uk and I will print it onto fabric and stitch it to the others.  Don’t forget to give me your name so I can credit your patch!
  6. I’ll post regular updates and pictures of the quilt so you can see how it’s coming along.   You can submit more than one.

The Quilt

Once the quilt is big enough (maybe around a metre squared), I think it would be cool to raffle or auction it and give the proceeds to charity.

It will be interesting to see what you all come up with.
